BNP: 162 UP aspirants stopped from submitting nomination forms

Update : 03 Mar 2016, 09:21 PM

The BNP has alleged that UP chairman hopefuls backed by the party were not allowed to submit their nominations in 162 union parishads.

“As of now, 162 BNP-backed aspirants could not submit their nomination papers because of ruling party men,” Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general of the party, said at a press conference in the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters yesterday.

The BNP leader alleged that the Election Commission was staying silent even after being informed of different allegations.

“Due to the bias of the Election Commission, 150 union parishad chairmen have been elected uncontested as of now,” he said.

The EC says the first phase of union parishad elections would be held on March 22 in 752 unions.

The commission also says the UP elections, which will be in partisan line for the first time ever, will be held in six phases in 4,275 unions.

According to the EC, the second phase of the polls will be held on March 31 in 710 union parishads, the third on April 23 in 711 UPs, the fourth on May 7 in 728 UPs, the fifth on May 28 in 714 UPs, and the sixth phase of the polls on June 4 in 660 union parishads.
