The ruling Awami League has announced the names of its 672 chairman candidates to vie for the second phase of union parishad polls slated to be held on March 31.
Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif made the declaration at a press conference at its Dhanmondi office yesterday.
The names were finalised at a meeting held earlier in the day. Members of the party’s Presidium and the election nomination board attended the meeting chaired by Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
In response to a query, Hanif said that 25 chairmen being elected uncontested was nothing wrong.
“This unopposed victory proves BNP’s political destruction and the people’s support towards the Awami League government’s development led by Prime minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added. The Election Commission on February 19 declared schedule for the polls to 684 UPs, but later postponed 12 of them.
The 12 UPs are Ghaghra of Kotalipara in Gopalganj; Bachore, Hossaingaon and Nanduar of Ranisankail in Thakurgaon; Begumpur, Shankarchandra and Titudah of Chuadanga Sadar; Khokshabari and Tupamari of Nilphamari sdar; Aminabad and Nurabad of Char Fashion in Bhola; and Kuchiamora of Magura Sadar.
