BCL men attack Titumir College students again

Update : 25 Feb 2016, 08:36 PM

Chhatra League activists yesterday beat up agitating students of Government Titumir College again for their protests against the sudden hike in tuition fees.

Activists of the college unit of Chhatra League swooped on protesting students at Shaheed Akkasur Rahman Ankhi Hall, leaving at least 15 students injured, witnesses said.

Among the injured, seven were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and they are Idris, Shah Alam, Abdul Motaleb, Asif, Aynal, Didar and Maheshwar.

Students said some 30-35 Chhatra League members entered the dormitory soon after midday and searched for agitating students. Led by Chhatra League’s Titumir College unit President Kazi Mirazul Islam Dollar, the Chhatra League men then attacked students.

It was also alleged that police and the college authorities took no action against the attackers.

But Kazi Mirazul denied the allegation and said some groups representing students from outside Dhaka were responsible for the incident.

“I was not present at the scene during the incident. As far as I know, it occurred between students from Narail and Brahmanbaria over their personal matters,” he said.

Banani police station Inspector (investigation) Wahiduzzaman said the incident was the result of a clash between two factions of Chhatra League.

“A faction from outside chased the members of the college unit. Police and the college authorities rescued the students and took them to safety,” he added.

Students of Titumir College have been protesting for a couple of days after the authorities hiked annual tuition fees to Tk4,217 while other colleges operating under National University charge Tk3,100.

In addition, admission fee was increased to Tk2,617 from Tk1,900, students said.
