Quader: AL not obstructing BNP

Update : 23 Feb 2016, 01:32 PM

Senior Awami League leader Obaidul Quader says the ruling party has not directed its leaders and activists to obstruct and threaten BNP's Upazila Parishad election aspirants.

“The local Awami League units could have done that [obstruct] but the party's central command has issued no such order,” he clarified Tuesday at Savar.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said the BNP had a shortage of candidates as most of them, accused in various cases, were on the run. “If BNP seeks the government's help, we will look for their candidates with police's help,” he quipped.

Earlier in the day, the BNP claimed the ruling party activists had threatened and obstructed its UP chairmen aspirants from submitting nominations in over 100 places. The minister asked the party to specify their claim.

Quader said: “The BNP is a registered political party and the government can never obstruct its activities. Only those [BNP activists] who are accused in cases are on the run.”

He was at Savar to inspect the progress of Abdullahpur-Baipail Highway's repair work. Quader vowed to free roads in Savar and Ashulia from illegal occupants by March 15.
