Khaleda demands arrest of Panchagarh priest's killers

Update : 23 Feb 2016, 07:52 AM

Condemning the brutal murder of a priest in Panchagarh, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has demanded the arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the BNP chief also prayed for quick recovery of the injured person.

She also termed the killing as a violent and perverted act.

Mentioning that the killing of Panchagarh priest indicates an ominous future, Khaleda said: "Citizens had repeatedly expressed the apprehension on the possibility of militant force's rise due to one-party rule in the country.

"The brutal murder planning began with the killing of Italian citizen Tavella and Panchagarh priest's murder is also a result of the perpetration. It seems that we are walking through the graveyard of the nation."

She said: "Now a question has been raised in people's mind that what the government is doing to overcome the crisis."

Priest Joggeshwar Roy, 50, was slaughtered with a machete on the verandah of his house, on Sunday morning.

Besides, his neighbour Gopal Chandra Roy, 35, received bullet injuries as he tried to save the priest.

Law enforcers suspect that members of banned Islamist group Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) slit the throat of the priest as part of their series of attacks on religious leaders and establishments.
