The ruling Awami League is likely to publish a list of its nominated chairman candidates for the first phase of the first ever partisan elections to the country’s lowest tier of local government system – the union councils.
The party has nominated 739 chairman candidates for the elections slated for March with party symbol, said Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif at a press conference yesterday.
The press conference was held after a meeting chaired by Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader at party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office.
“Our election nomination board has finalised nominations of 250 candidates on first day of the two-day meeting on February 16 and 17 and remaining chairman posts will be finished today [yesterday evening],” he said.
Awami League also confirmed 10 municipality candidates for the re-elections of the 10 municipalities scheduled for March 20, he added.
The ruling party joint general secretary also said that the candidates had been finally nominated in the meeting of party nomination board chaired by Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Gonobhaban.
“We have directed the local units to select single chairman candidates for every union parishad by February 22 for first phase on March 22 and second phase on March 30 of the union parishad polls,” Hanif said.
In reply to a query, he said: “We hope no party man will join the UP polls violating party rules. If anyone joins the polls as rebel candidate, they will be expelled.”
