The Election Commission has announced the schedule for polls to 10 municipalities in nine districts, fixing ballot on March 20.

The schedule, declared as a notification, says that the deadline for submission of nomination papers is February 22.

Scrutiny of nomination will be done on February 24 and 25. The last date for withdrawing candidature will be March 4.

The 10 municipalities are Haragachh of Rangpur, Kaliganj of Jhenidah, Jhalakati, Bhanga of Faridpur, Brahmanbaria, Nangalkot of Comilla, Kabirhat of Noakhali, Sonagazi of Feni, and Chakaria and Maheshkhali of Cox’s Bazar.

On December 30 last year, elections were held to a total of 234 out of the country’s 323 municipalities in which as many as 20 political parties ran their mayoral candidates.

The ruling Awami League candidates swept nearly four fifths of the mayoral posts which saw partisan contests for the first time in the history of local government elections in Bangladesh.
