Joy again wants Mahfuz Anam behind bars

Update : 05 Feb 2016, 07:29 PM

The editor of the Daily Star, Mahfuz Anam, should be arrested for running “false corruptions [sic] stories” against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the premier’s son and her ICT Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy has demanded.

In a post on his Facebook page yesterday, Joy wrote: “His [Mahfuz Anam] false stories led to my mother’s arrest and spending 11 months in jail. I demand justice. I want Mahfuz Anam behind bars and on trial for treason.”

He added that the newspaper editor had ran the false stories in an attempt to remove his mother from politics.

“He is constantly writing against politicians as being unethical and corrupt. By his own admission he is completely unethical and a liar. He certainly has no right to remain a journalist, let alone an editor. His activities went beyond just being corrupt. They were unpatriotic and anti-Bangladesh,” Joy went on.

On Wednesday, Mahfuz Anam in a TV talk show admitted that he made a big mistake by running stories on Sheikh Hasina’s corruption based on information given by the DGFI during the 2007-08 army-backed caretaker regime.

“I admit it. It was a big mistake as an editor, in my journalism career,” Anam said at the talk show.

Earlier on February 26 last year, Joy had urged the government to arrest and try Mahfuz Anam and Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain.

At the time, he made unsupported allegations that Kamal Hossain and Mahfuz Anam had openly urged the military to stay in power indefinitely after 1/11.
