AL warns speakers of making biased remark on martyrs figure

Update : 30 Jan 2016, 07:17 AM

Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif has said those making controversial remarks on the number of the 1971 Liberation War martyrs will have to face legal action for the offence.

“The figure of martyrs in the 1971 Liberation War and father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman are settled issues. Legal action will be adopted against those who would make derogatory remarks about the issues and try to create controversy over those,” Hanif said.

The senior AL leader made the statement in a press conference at the party chief's Dhanmondi office on Saturday morning. The ruling party arranged the briefing in protest of controversial remarks of some BNP leaders about the martyrs number.

The BNP was formed with the spirit of Pakistan and its founder Ziaur Rahman was an agent of the country during the Liberation War, Hanif alleged.

“Zia created the political platform for Jamaat-e-Islami in the country after the independence and BNP Chairperson Khaleda made some Jamaat leaders minister. Their (Zia and Khaleda) such activities prove that the Zia family believes in the Pakistani spirit.

“This is why they are repeatedly making the derogatory remarks in a bid to create controversy about our Liberation War,” Hanif continued.
