Khaleda, Goyeshwar sued for libel

Update : 05 Jan 2016, 07:11 PM

A case was filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy for their remarks on the number of martyrs during the Liberation War.

AB Siddiqui, president of the Bangabandhu Jananetri Parishad, yesterday filed the complaint with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) court under section 500, 501 and 506 of the Penal Code.

After hearing the complaint, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Aminul Haque, ordered the officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station to investigate the matter and submit a report on February 7.

According to the complaint, the BNP chief came up with “false and derogatory remarks” about the state and its creation while addressing a function of Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal at the city’s Engineers Institution Auditorium on December 21 last year.

Khaleda expressed doubt over the number of people who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War in 1971, claiming the figure is disputed.

Besides, not mentioning the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Khaleda said he (Bangabandhu) did not want independence, rather wanted to be the prime minister of Pakistan.

In a flurry of outrageous remarks, BNP leader Goyeshwar on December 25, last year described the 1971 martyred intellectuals as “anti-liberation elements” who “died like fools” and drew salaries and allowances from Pakistan until the end of the war.
