Liberal Democratic Party chief Oli Ahmed yesterday said that the incumbent Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad would have face trial for failing to discharge his constitutional role properly.
“A day will come when the CEC will be tried for stripping the people of voting rights in the same manner as convicted war criminal Ghulam Azam has been tried,” said Oli.
The LDP chief made the comment while addressing a press conference at his Laldighi residence in the city. The LDP organised press conference for presenting a scenario on the just-concluded mayoral polls held on December 30.
“The CEC has claimed that the polls were largely peaceful. This statement is true since no vote was cast during daytime. The ruling party men stuffed the ballot boxes well before the voters came to the polling centres. And this was carried out in collusion with the unscrupulous presiding and polling officers,” added Oli.
“I do not know if they believe in religion. If so, it was their sacred duty to hand over the ballot papers to the voters. However, they did not do it. The voters were not given ballot papers for mayoral posts in many polling centres in Chandanaish municipality in Chittagong,” said the LDP chief.
“The stamped ballots were stuffed in the ballot boxes. The polling centres in Patiya, Banshkhali and Chandanaish municipalities were occupied by the ruling party men,” alleged Oli.
The press conference was attended by BNP south district president Jafrul Islam, Chittagong city BNP vice-president Abu Sufian and LDP south district president Kafil Uddin, among others.
