Update : 29 Dec 2015, 10:26 PM

Even after election campaig deadline expired Monday midnight, candidates in municipalities of Sylhet division continued to reach out to voters using digital media.

Candidates used SMS and Facebook to get an edge over rivals. Voters said they received texts not seeking votes but blessings.

Golam Kibria Chowdhury, BNP candidate in Golapganj municipality, admitted that he had sought blessing of the elders over mobile phone after the campaign deadline ended.

Apart from the digital strategy adopted by the candidates, there are also allegations that a lot of money is changing hands in the final hours before the election.

In Jagannathpur municipality of Sunamganj, all three mayoral candidates are UK expatriates who are allegedly spending way over the Tk1 lakh limit set by the Election Commission.

“Londoners have brought pounds. Those who can spend the most are deemed the most powerful Londoners and strongest candidates,” Abdul Alim, a local voter from Bhabanipur village, told ther Dhaka Tribune.
