BNP: Army deployment essential for fair polls

Update : 27 Dec 2015, 08:01 PM

The BNP has reiterated that army deployment is essential to ensure the safety of voters and the proper staging of a free and fair municipal election.

BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan made the remarks to reporters after leading a five-member delegation to an hour-long meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad at the capital’s EC secretariat yesterday.

However, dismissing the BNP’s concerns, the CEC said the election atmosphere has been good so far, with the exception of a few sporadic incidents.

The law and order situation would improve even further in the run-up to the election, Rakibuddin added.

This is the third time, and twice in a week, the BNP had urged the EC to ensure a congenial atmosphere in municipal election areas.

The party also asked the Election Commission to make necessary arrangements so that voters can exercise their franchise without any obstacle or intimidation.

The delegation called upon the commission to hold a free and fair election for the greater interest of democracy.

They also alleged that BNP supporters were being threatened, obstructed and intimidated by ruling party men during polls campaigning.
