A BNP-backed mayor candidate in Dinajpur was hospitalised after he was hacked by assailants early on Wednesday.
Azadul Islam Azad, mayor candidate for Birampur municipality, was attacked in Islampur while returning home by a rickshaw after electioneering in several areas.
It was not clear who attacked Azad, who was first taken to Birampur Upazila Health Complex but was later shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Locals said he sustained three injuries in the attack, which also left the rickshaw puller injured.
Officer-in-Charge of Birampur police station Amiruzzaman said police were trying to find the attackers.
He said a case would be filed in this connection.
Meanwhile, BNP's Rangpur unit General Secretary Mukur Chowdhury claimed at a press briefing on Wednesday morning that Azadul was attacked by goons hired local Awami League leaders.
He also claimed other BNP candidates in the district had been threatened.
Municipal elections across the country are slated for December 30.
