Two Shibir leaders among 3 shot in Joypurhat 'gunfight'

Two local Chhatra Shibir leaders and an Awami League activist have been shot in a reported gunfight with police at Jatair village in Panchbibi upazila of the district.

Besides, three local policemen including a sub-inspector got wounded in the shootout erupted in an orchard in the village early Friday. The injured received treatment from Joypurhat Adhunik Hospital.

The injured, Abu Jar Gifari, president of Joypurhat unit Shibir, Omar Ali, secretary of the unit, and local AL activist Al-Amin got admitted to the district hospital.

Later, two Shibir leaders, who sustained bullets in their right legs, were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital when their condition deteriorated.

Police arrested Panchbibi upazila unit Jamaat-e-Islami acting secretary Sujaul Islam along with one firearm and four machetes from the spot.

When asked, Panchbibi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashraful Alam acknowledged the gunfight to the Dhaka Tribune and said: “We have carried out the raid taking two arrested Shibir leaders who informed us of a secret meeting in the orchard to commit subversive activities. Sensing our presence the miscreants started firing at us and police forced to retaliate, leaving three people injured.”

The OC also said both the Shibir leaders received bullet injuries in their right legs as plotters fired at police.

However, the miscreants run away the spot in the face of resistance of police.

Al-Amin's wife Borsha Begum claimed: “My husband is an Awami League activist and he is actively involved in the politics. Professionally he is a truck driver. On Thursday, he went to Aulai village in the upazila to attend the marriage ceremony of his cousin and police picked up him around 10:30am that day. This morning, I have been informed that my husband was hospitalised with bullet injuries.”

When contacted, ANM Showkat Habib Logic, Aulai UP chairman and a member of Joypurhat upazila unit AL, said Al-Amin was an AL activist.
