The two mayors of Dhaka have promised to waive holding taxes for freedom fighters living in the country’s capital city.
Sayeed Khokon, mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, was the first to make this promise while speaking at a Victory Day reunion programme of freedom fighters at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
Earlier, the freedom fighters unanimously requested the mayor to consider waiving holding taxes for them and their families who own houses in the city.
Later, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq, who was also present at the programme, made the same promise.
“The sacrifices you made during the Liberation War is unforgettable. Your contribution in 1971 outweighs the demand you have made today [for waiving holding tax]. So, we will try heart and soul to fulfill your demand,” Annisul told the freedom fighters.
Khokon also assured that the promise would be implemented with immediate effect.
“Alongside waiving holding taxes, the Roads in Dhaka city will be named after freedom fighters. Moreover, a separate graveyard would also be built at Jurain,” Khokon pledged.
