Voters to see triangle fight among independent, BNP and AL candidates

People of Khagrachhari sadar municipality are expecting to see triangle contest among independent, BNP and Awami League candidates in the upcoming municipality election.

Independent candidate and running Khagrachhari municipality mayor Md Rafiqul Alam is being considered as heavyweight candidate along with Awami League candidate Md Shane Alam and BNP candidate Advocate Abdul Malek Mintu, local sources said.

Civil society leader and Khagrachhari District Corruption Prevention Committee President Sudarsan Dutta said the incumbent municipality mayor Md Rafiqul Alam had done  development activities involving Tk100 in the last five years.

No citizen able to lodge any irregularities complaint against him in either court or in Anti-Corruption Commission, Sudarsan said.

“I think voters to cast their vote considering the development activities of incumbent mayor Md Rafiqul Alam, Sudarsan said, adding that running mayor would change the fate of citizens, if he is elected for second time”.

Khagrachhari district BNP President Wadud Bhuiyan said most of the voters out of 33,619 are BNP supported and they would cast their valuable votes to BNP-backed candidate.

“Terming BNP-backed candidate as an educated candidate, Wadud Bhuiyan hopes at least 60%t voters to cast their vote to BNP candidate”. Awami League and independents candidates would not any barrier to BNP candidate, Wadud Bhuiyan added.

District Awami League president and local lawmaker Kujendra Lal Tripura said contest might be triangle, but Awami Legue candidate win after bagging majorities votes.

“Voters in the Khagrachhari have seen huge development during Awami League government period and the process of development would continue more if Awami Legue candidate win in the race. Voters are the best judges to choose best mayor for the next five years,” he said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer for Khagrachhari municipality ATM Kousar Hossain said there were a total of 33,619 voters comprising 19,122 male and 14,497 female voters, who cast their votes at 85 vote centres in the whole municipality.

“We would welcome the candidate, who can able to win in the upcoming municipality election schedule to be held on December 30.
