7 injured in Titumir college BCL clash

Update : 12 Dec 2015, 07:18 PM

At least seven activists of the ruling party’s student front Chhatra League were injured in a factional clash at the Government Titumir College in Dhaka yesterday.

The injured are: Sohel, 26, Mahiuddin, 25, Abdul Aziz, 28, Billal Hossain, 22, Mostafa, 20, Joy, 20, and Abu Bakar, 21 – all  from the district of Brahmanbaria.

After the clash that took place around midday, they were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 2pm. However, all of them left the hospital three hours later. The condition of Mahiuddin, who received injuries on the head, was said to be critical.

Most of the injured and those who came with them at the hospital refused to make any comments to reporters about the clash.

Only Abdul Aziz, one of the injured, said the clash followed an altercation that Salman Mitra, general secretary of the college’s Akhi residential hall unit BCL, had with a rival group.

However, seeking anonymity, a student of the college said the clash took place between a group of students from Brahmanbaria and another group of students from Gopalganj.

The student also said a few days ago, a member of the Gopalganj group slapped a member of the Brahmanbaria group. The altercation that resulted from this ended up in a violent clash yesterday.

“It was all about establishing supremacy in the college,” the student said.

Salauddin Ahmed, OC of the Banani police station, said that the situation was now under control with additional law enforcers deployed on and around the college campus.

Denying that establishing supremacy had anything to do with the clash, Titumir college unit BCL President Kazi Mirajul Islam said it took place centring a “senior-junior” issue.
