Moulvibazar OC accused of campaigning for AL candidate

Update : 12 Dec 2015, 07:17 PM

Three mayoral candidates in Moulvibazar’s Kulaura municipality have recently complained to the Election Commission against the officer-in-charge of Kulaura police station.

They complained that the officer-in-charge, Matiar Rahman, had campaigned in favour of Awami League-backed candidate Shafi Ahmd Salman, which they described as a serious offence and also demanded the removal of the police official.

The three are BNP-backed candidate Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Jatiya Party-backed Muhibur Rahman and Awami League rebel candidate Shafi Alam Yunus.

The contestants emailed the complaint to the Election Commission’s Dhaka office while copies of it were also sent to the returning officer of Kulaura, deputy commissioner of Moulvibazar and divisional commissioner of Sylhet.

Md Istafizul Haque Akand, Moulvibazar district election officer, said he had received a copy of the complaint. “The higher authorities will take necessary steps in this regard.”

But OC Matiar told the Dhaka Tribune that the complaint against him was baseless and unfounded.

“The candidates filed the complaint as police have been very strict since the acts of violence perpetrated by BNP members early this year,” he said.
