The Awami League has decided to expel any rebel candidate of the municipality polls who fails to withdraw nomination by tomorrow.
“Although we issued a 24-hour ultimatum [from a meeting on Wednesday], I am now announcing that every rebel will be expelled after December 13,” Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said yesterday.
Replying to a query, he said around 60% of the rebel Awami League candidates have withdrawn their nominations as of yesterday.
Since the announcement of the polls schedule, the ruling party has repeatedly warned its rebel mayoral aspirants that they would face harsh punishment for defying party orders.
On Wednesday, the Awami League set a 24-hour ultimatum for its rebel candidates. The decision came from a meeting of Awami League policy makers, chaired by party chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at the Ganabhaban.
