Chhengarchar municipality AL candidate to win unopposed

Update : 11 Dec 2015, 06:48 PM

The Awami League-backed mayoral candidate for Chhengarchar municipality in Chandpur is expected to be elected uncontested after the deputy commissioner dismissed an appeal filed by the BNP-backed contestant against the cancellation of his nomination.

Sarwarul Abedin, who was fielded by the BNP, filed the appeal after Returning Officer Md Mafizul Islam, also the upazila nirbahi officer of Matlab (north), cancelled his nomination on December 5 for giving inconsistent information.

But on Thursday, Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Md Abdus Sabur Mondol, dismissed the appeal after hearing it in the presence of Sarwarul and his counsels, Mafizul and Chandpur Election Officer Md Ataur Rahman.

Ataur said Sarwarul enclosed his TIN (tax identification number) certificate with the nomination form but did not submit the latest tax return submission certificate.

“The candidate mentioned in the nomination form that he had studied up to the Higher Secondary Certificate level but this contradicted the information we found in his national ID card database, which showed that he is a graduate. For these inconsistencies, his appeal was not accepted.”

But Sarwarul said the dismissal of his appeal was an injustice.

His lawyer Salim Ullah said an appeal would be filed with the High Court.

“We submitted all the necessary documents but still the appeal was dismissed. I have no idea what they are looking for,” he said.

After the dismissal of Sarwarul’s appeal, Awami League-backed candidate Rafiqul Alam George is now the only contestant in Chhengarchar municipality polls.
