SC removes bar on holding Singair municipality polls

Update : 07 Dec 2015, 07:41 PM

The Supreme Court has cleared the way for local elections to be held in Singair municipality of Manikganj on December 30.

Appellate Division Chamber Judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain removed the restriction by staying until January 21 an earlier High Court ruling that had postponed the Singair munipal polls for six months.

On December 1, High Court Justice Zinat Ara and Justice AKM Shahidul Huq had postponed the election after hearing on a writ petition that alleged errors in the municipality voter list.

The initial High Court stay was based on a writ petition filed by Md Mostak Ahmed Bhuiya, the younger brother of the incumbent municipal mayor Advocate Khorshed Alam Bhuiya.

Following the High Court order, the local returning officer and district election officer, Munir Hossain, had put on hold all election-related activities in the areas from Saturday evening. But talking to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday, he said polls process would resume after receiving the proper court documents.

Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain also told the Dhaka Tribune that the Supreme Court ruling meant there was now no bar on holding an election to the municipality.
