Many AL, BNP men to fight as independent candidates

Local leaders of Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Joypurhat Sadar, Kalai and Akkelpur upazilas have decided to participate in the upcoming municipality polls as independent candidate after they did not get party nomination.

Local sources said they had bought nomination papers and supporters of them already started campaign for the polls.

Mostafuzur Rahman, joint-secretary of Joypurhat Awami League, Khandoker Halimul Alam, Awami League president of Kalali upazila, and Golam Mahfuz, general secretary of Akkelpur have got party’s green signal among 11 candidates.

Nandalal Sharshi, the district AL president and Enaetpur Rahman, convenor of Akkelpur AL, decided to participate the poll as independent candidate.

Principal Shamsul Haque, BNP leader of Joypurhat, Sazzadur Rahman Shohel Talukder, general secretary of BNP in Kalai got nomination from the party.

Anisur Rahman Talukder, BNP vice-president of the district, is going to participate the poll as independent candidate after he did not get nomination from the party.

Nandalal said he had participated in the last municipality poll from the party. But this year, as he did not get nomination from the party, he had decided to participate in the poll as independent candidate.

Enaetpur Rahman said he had hoped that the party would nominate him. But his party did not select him as mayor candidate. So he decided to participate in the poll as independent candidate.

Anisur said: “I have popularity in the area. The party should nominate me. As the party did not nominate me, I have decided that I should participate the poll as independent candidate.”
