A faction of the ruling party Awami League at Betagi upazila yesterday observed a day-long hartal, protesting the party’s high-ups decision of selecting Altaf Hossain, as the party’s candidate for the upcoming municipality elections.
Local sources said the supporters of Golam Kabir, president of the upazila unit Awami, had enforced the hartal.
Golam Kabir said the people of the upazila did not want Altaf as a mayor candidate as he was the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the area.
“If the party does not withdrew the nomination, we will continue our movement,” he said.
Rafiqul Isalm, officer-in-charge of Betagi police station, said additional police forces had been deployed in the upazila.
