Local administration has imposed section 144 in Nandail upazila town of Mymensingh as two factions of Awami League called meeting at the same time and venue.
The section 144 came in force from 10:30pm Friday and the restriction will be applicable until further notice in this regard is issued, says Nandail police station OC Ataur Rahman.
Sources said a tense situation appeared growing in the town as supporters of local lawmaker Anwarul Abedin Khan Tuhin and former MP Major General (rtd) Abdus Salam were on the edge of face-off over forming a committee for Nandail upazila unit Awami League.
Tuhin group called a meeting on the premises of Nandail Shaheed Smrity College on Saturday while Abdus Salam made an announcement to hold procession and sudden rally there as well.
Finally apprehending possible clash between both groups, the administration had to adopt the stern action.
When contacted, ex-MP Abdus Salam said Tuhin was made convenor of the upazila committee some days ago, but the AL central authorities cancelled his post on Friday.
MP Tuhin denied the claim of his rival and said the activities of the Nandail upazila unit AL's convenor committee were postponed, not cancelled.
