Chittagong University (CU) authorities have temporarily suspended two activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in connection with Monday’s factional clash between two groups of BCL that left at least 50 persons including four police men injured.
The expelled students are Mizanur Rahman Khan, student of Management Studies department for 2012-2013 session and Mofazzel Haidar Hosssain, student of Fine Arts department under 2012-2013 session, said a press release signed by Deputy Registrar (Information) of CU.
CU Proctor Ali Azgar Chowdhury said the decision was taken at Board of Residence, Health and Disciplinary Committee’s meeting while the students were expelled from the university for temporarily periods as committee found the duo’s involvement during the factional clash.
Seeking unnamed, an assistant proctor of CU told the Dhaka Tribune that both the expelled are engaged with BCL politics and were seen to whet sharp weapons in a bid to carry out attack on their rivals BCL men during the clash which photo was published at the several newspapers on the following day.
The president and secretary groups locked into a fierce clash over fixing spot to greet admission seekers during a written test of CU admission while police brought the situation under control by firing tear canister and rubber bullets.
At least 30 BCL men were injured in the clash while Chittagong District Police’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar) Md Shahidullah, Hathazari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ismail and two other police constables were received critically injured.
Later police recovered two pipe guns and 100 sharps weapons after raiding two BCL dominated dormitories and arrested 38 BCL men while police filed three cases accusing 235 BCL men with Hathazari police station.
