A total of 10 candidates submitted their nomination papers yesterday to the returning officer, the last day of submission, for contesting Tangail-4 (Kalihati) by-poll.
According to the sources of district election office, Awami League-backed candidate Hasan Imam Khan, BNF-backed candidate Ataur Rahman Khan, JP (Ershad) candidate Sayed Mostaq Hossen, JP (Monju) candidate Sadek Siddiqui, Krisok Sramik Janata League (KSJL) president Abdul Kader Siddiqui, his wife Nasrin Siddiqui joint secretary of KSJL Iqbal Hossen Siddiqui, joint secretary of KSJL Hasmot Ali, National Peoples Party-backed candidate Imrul Kaies and Independent candidate Abdul Alim submitted their papers.
Md Alimuzzaman, returning officer of the by poll, says scrutiny of nomination papers will be completed on October 13. The last date of withdrawal of candidature is October 21.Symbols will be allocated on October 22.
Tangail-4 constituency was declared vacant from September 1 after the expelled Awami League leader, Latif Siddique, tendered his resignation letter to the Jatiya Sangsad speaker.
In September last year, the now-former Tangail lawmaker and then telecom minister Latif faced severe criticism from different quarters after making untoward remarks about Hajj and Tabligh Jamaat at a programme in the USA.
The Election Commission fixed October 28 for holding the by-poll. But later, it declares that the poll will be held on November 10.
