The authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have temporarily expelled four members of Chhatra League for their alleged involvement in Sunday's assault on demonstrating teachers.
The expelled students are Dhani Ram Roy of Statistics Department, Abdullah Al Masum of Political Studies Department, Ariful Islam Arif and Jahid Hossain Nayeem of Forests and Environment Department.
SUST Proctor Professor Kamruzzaman Chowdhury told the Dhaka Tribune that the proctorial body recommended the expulsion Monday.
On Sunday, activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League assaulted a group of SUST teachers who were protesting the vice-chancellor’s corruption and irregularities. At least seven teachers were injured in the attack.
The teachers – some of whom were among the founders of the university – accuse the VC of violating rules in recruiting his brother-in-law, making university staff do his personal tasks, misusing public funds, embezzling university’s money to go on foreign trips and discriminating against some of his colleagues.
Probe committee formed
The SUST authority has formed a three-member probe body to investigate the incident.
SUST VC Prof Aminul Haque Bhuyan told journalists yesterday that the probe committee would be led by physical science faculty Dean Prof Sabina Yasmin.
Meanwhile, social media networks continued to see harsh criticism of Chhatra League, while Sunday’s violence was also condemned by different organisations.
In a joint statement signed by CUTA President Dr Md Abul Mansur and General Secretary Dr Kazi SM Kashrul Alam Quddushi, the Chittagong University Teachers Association (CUTA) yesterday said the assault on teachers was disgraceful and unacceptable.
In a press release, Jagannath University Teachers Association General Secretary Prof Md Abul Hossain demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
The Ekattorer Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee also condemned the attack and demanded punishment for the Chhatra League goons and removal of the controversial SUST VC.
