August 21 attack: BNP denies PM’s accusation

Update : 23 Aug 2015, 09:03 PM

BNP yesterday refuted prime minister’s claim that Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman were involved in the August 21 grenade attack.

The party’s International Affairs Secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon said it was very painful and also a cause of concern.

“We want to tell the prime minister that a quarter may be trying to mislead her by giving such false information. Our party does not believe in the politics of killing,” he told a press briefing at the Nayapaltan office.

Ripon said the case was still under trial and such comments from the head of the government might influence proceedings.

“We also want to see the real masterminds of the heinous attack brought to book through judicial inquiry and fair probe.”

The BNP leader said it would be painful to accept if it was revealed that the attack was aimed at eradicating political opponents.

He urged the government to stop throwing allegations and counter-allegations. “But that does not mean criminals should be spared.”

Ripon also announced a one-day programme to mark the party’s 37th founding anniversary on September 1.

As part of the programme, national and party flags will be hoisted at BNP’s Nayapaltan office, wreaths will be placed at party founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave and a discussion will be held at Institution of Diploma Engineers.

Ripon said the BNP had decided to observe the party’s founding anniversary this year in spite of the severe political crisis the country was in.

“We will also hold two discussions on September 3 and 12 marking the release of Tarique and Khaleda from prison respectively.”
