Supreme Court cancels BNP leaders’ bail

Update : 27 Jul 2015, 07:48 PM

The Supreme Court canceled bail for three BNP leaders and asked them to surrender before a lower court within a week in 52 separate violence cases yesterday.

The High Court had granted bail to BNP standing committee member MK Anwar, Adviser to chairperson Abdul Awal Mintoo and Joint Secretary General Aman Ullah Aman.

The cases were filed against them with different police stations in and outside Dhaka during the movement enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance after January 5.

Scrapping the bail a four-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha yesterday told the concerned lower courts to consider their bail prayers after surrender.

On the other hand the SC upheld an HC order that had granted bail to BNP leader Tariqul Islam in four cases filed for arson and vandalism.

The SC orders came following hearing into 56 separate petitions of the government seeking stay on the HC anticipatory bail awarded to those leaders. The court had given four week’s anticipatory bail to MK Anwar in nine cases, Mintoo in one, Tariqul in four and Aman in 42 cases.
