The main political opposition BNP has expressed concerns as 15-17-year-old citizens are being included in the voter list update.
“There is an ill-intent of the Election Commission behind including 15-17 year old citizens in the voter list, which is completely illegal,” Asaduzzaman Ripon, acting spokesperson of the party, told journalists at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters in the capital.
The BNP leader expressed his concern saying there might be a conspiracy to rig voting in the local government elections.
Terming the Election Commission (EC) a failed one, Ripon said: “The chief election commissioner and his associate commissioners should resign voluntarily for engaging in anti-constitutional activities.”
He said though it is supposed to be a routine activity of the EC to update the voter list, this commission has completely failed to carry out the duty earlier.
“According to International Foundation for Electoral System, there were 8,10,00,058 voters; and women voters outnumbered the male voters at that time. But the number of women voters have decreased since then...this is alarming.”
