Update : 20 Jul 2015, 07:42 PM

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday announced its Chittagong University (CU) unit with Alamgir Tipu as president and HM Fazly Rabbi Sujon as general secretary.

The new President Tipu is an accused in a double murder case while General Secretary Sujon is an accused in a case filed under explosive act, said police and CU sources.

Alamgir Tipu was a student of Economics Departments for the 2006-2007 academic session while Sujon was a student of Finance Department for the 2007-2008 academic session.

Central BCL General Secretary Siddique Nazmul Alam told the Dhaka Tribune: “We formally declared the partial committee of CU BCL unit making Alamgir Tipu as president and Sujon as secretary for the next one year.

“We have formed the committee on the basis of information gathered from detective personnel, locals and political leaders in Chittagong and talked to policymakers of the BCL,” he added.

Earlier, the BCL CU committee was dissolved on June 10 last year after a clash between two factions on the campus.

According to campus sources and newspaper reports at least five bloody clashes had been taken place after the CU committee was dissolved leaving Tapos Sarkar, a first-year student of Sangskrit Department and also a BCL activist, shot dead.

More than 50 BCL leaders and activists have also been injured during those factional bloody clashes.

Alamgir Tipu is an accused in the CRB double murder case filed with Kotwali police station on 24 June in 2013. Fazly Rabbi Sujon is an accused in a case filed in connection with trading gun shots between two groups of the BCL on September 27 last year in Shahjalal dormitory.

The case was filed with Hathazari police station, said police sources. Both Tipu and Sujon are now on bail.

Contacted, both the accused said the cases were politically motivated.

The BCL formed its earlier 238-member committee with Mamunul Haque and MA Khaled Chowdhury as president and secretary respectively on June 26 in 2011.
