SC orders Fakhrul’s medical check-up

Update : 05 Jul 2015, 09:06 PM

The Supreme Court yesterday ordered Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital authorities to arrange a check-up for BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

It asked the hospital authorities to form a three-member medical board to examine the BNP leader’s health condition, and submit the report by Wednesday.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha also said an order on the government’s petition against Fakhrul’s bail in three cases would be given on Wednesday.

Fakhrul, who is now undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, was granted bail by the High Court in the cases.

Fakhrul’s counsel Sagir Hossain Lion told reporters the court would decide whether it would uphold the BNP leader’s bail after seeing the medical report from the hospital.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the prosecution pleaded with the court to seek a fresh medical report as the authenticity of the previous report that Fakhrul submitted to seek bail from the High Court was questionable.

On June 21, the High Court granted Fakhrul bail in the three cases filed with Paltan police station. The prosecution then filed a petition challenging the bail order and Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique forwarded it to the Appellate Division, which heard it yesterday.

On June 28, the Supreme Court upheld Fakhrul’s bail pending an investigation report on any of the three cases.

The BNP acting secretary general was arrested on January 6, a day after the BNP had declared a countrywide blockade demanding elections under a non-partisan government. He was shown arrested in seven cases filed on charges of vandalism, arson attacks and explosions.
