Sacked minister Abdul Latif Siddique, who is facing a number of cases filed for hurting religious sentiment, was freed on bail yesterday.
The former minister arrested on November 25, 2014 was undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) prison cell.
Senior Jail Superintendent Farman Ali confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about Latif’s release. He said: “Latif Siddique was freed around 4:45pm yesterday form the prison cell of BSMMU.”
Latif Siddique secured bails form the High Court in 17 cases filed against him.
He was transferred to the BSMMU from the Dhaka Central Jail after he felt chest pain.
The expelled minister was languishing in jail from November 25 in a case filed for hurting the countrymen’s religious sentiment by making controversial remarks on Islam and Tablig Jamaat.
On October 28, a Dhaka court issued a warrant of arrest against lawmaker Latif as he did not appear before the court despite being summoned.
Pro-BNP lawyer Abed Raja filed the case on October 2 with the Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.
Six other cases were filed with the same court against Latif for his controversial remarks made on September 28 during a meeting in New York.
A number of cases have been filed with different courts across the country and most of the courts issued arrest warrants against Latif.
