Six BCL men injured in factional clash at CU

Update : 06 Jun 2015, 08:29 PM

Six were injured during a clash between two shuttle train-based groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League Chittagong University (CU) unit on campus yesterday.

Following a previous rivalry, members of a BCL group “Concord” hacked with sharp weapons three members of another faction “Ekakar” in the rail station area inside the campus around 2:30pm, witnesses said.

As the news spread among other members of Ekakar, they gathered in front of Shahjalal Hall while the Concord members took position in front of Shah Amanat Hall, all equipped with lethal weapons.

At one point of chase and counter-chase, police fired five rounds of tear gas to bring the situation under control, said Hathazari police station Officer-in-Charge Md Ismail Hossain.

Ten were arrested while several machetes were recovered in an abandoned state from the spot, he said.

The six injured – former BCL CU Unit Organising Secretary Nazmul Hossain from the Accounting department, Chhoton Sharma, first-year student of geography department, Jihad Rashid of geography department, Niaz Arfin of the physics department, Nitul Chowhdury of the chemistry department, and Rahul Majumdar of political science – were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Of them, Nazmul and Choton are activists of Concord, while the rest belong to Ekakar.

Nazmul was hacked in front of Suhrawardi Hall, said police.

Till filing of this report, tension was mounting on campus as the two groups were still alert in Shahjalal and Shah Amanat dorms, said campus sources.

Earlier, on May 2, students loyal to Chittagong mayor AJM Nasir Uddin clashed at the university to establish their dominance. At least eight were injured in the clash between two BCL factions, “Sixty Nine” and “Banglar Mukh.”
