14 BCL men issued show cause notice for defying ban

At least 14 activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League Shahjalal Science and Technology University unit were issued show cause notice yesterday for bringing out a procession on the campus defying ban of political activities.

The students who were issued the show cause notice include Abdul Quader Redwan of political administration department, Rabiul Alam Robin of the same department, Nure Alam Bappi of Social Science department, Ali Hasan of English department, Jakaria of population science department, Syed Joyem of English department, Istiak Ahmed Himon of public administration department and Abdullah Al Masum of statistics department.

Confirming the news, acting proctor Emdadul Haque earlier the university authorities had imposed ban on all types of political activities on the campus earlier to keep congenial atmosphere here, but defying the ban the BCL members had recently brought out a procession here.

The BCL men were asked to give reply of the show cause notice within five working days.

“As the university will go on Sumner vacation on Sunday, the students have to give reply of the show cause after classes and academic activities of the university resume,” he said.

On Tuesday, supporters of Abu Said Akand, vice-president, and Emran Khan, general secretary, of BCL Shahjalal Science and Technology University unit, took out a procession on the campus.

The university was closed for sine die following the death of a student in a clash between factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League on November 20, last year. During the time, the university imposed ban on all political activities on the campus.

Later, the authorities opened the university on January 18. But ban on poliitcal activities remains unchanged.
