Probe body formed over Pintu’s death

Update : 04 May 2015, 01:59 PM

A three-member probe body has been formed after family members brought an allegation of negligence in the treatment of former BNP lawmaker Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu, who died on Sunday in Rajshahi.

Dhaka Divisional Deputy Jail Superintendent Golam Haider was made chief of the probe body, while the two other members are Senior Jail Super of Kashimpur Central Jail Mizanur Rahman and Senior Jail Super of Mymensingh Central Jail Iqbal Kabir Chowdhury, confirmed a source of Rajshahi Central Jail.

The probe body was on the way to Rajshahi on Monday afternoon, Rajshahi Central Jail Superintendent Shafiqul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune.

The probe body was asked to investigate whether there was any negligence of the Rajshahi Jail authority in rendering medical services to the deceased Pintu.

The probe body, however, was asked to submit its report by May 7.

Earlier on Sunday, Pintu died on his way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) after he had a cardiac arrest.

Pintu, a former president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), had been staying at the Rajshahi Central Jail since April 20 after he was transferred from Gazipur’s Kashimpur Jail.

After Pintu's death, his family members and party men accused jail authorities of negligence in rendering him with proper medical treatment.

On November 5, 2013, Pintu was awarded life imprisonment and fined Tk500,000 for his involvement in the killing of 57 army officers during the BDR mutiny in February 2009 at Pilkhana in Dhaka.

Later in January 2014, the convict filed an appeal with the High Court, challenging his conviction in the BDR carnage case.

In March this year, the BNP leader collected a nomination form to contest in the Dhaka South City Corporation mayoral race. However, the Election Commission cancelled his nomination paper as he was a convict in the BDR massacre case.

The deceased was buried at Dhaka Azimpur Graveyard on Monday.
