Within an hour of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s press briefing on recommendations for the next general elections, ruling Awami League came up with its reaction, saying Khaleda’s formula was "nothing new and pointless".
The ruling party statement also claimed that Khaleda did not have confidence in elections because her party does not have trust in the people.
"BNP is becoming detached from the people thanks to their series of wrongs, mostly their politics of conspiracy," said Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader from a prepared statement at a press conference in the party’s Dhanmondi political office around 5:50pm Friday.
The party demanded that before prescribing formula for the elections, Khaleda must apologise for "trying to save war criminals, killing people in the name of movements, her son Tarique Rahman’s money laundering and her fake celebration of birthday".
“We know how many times Khaleda Zia had tried to foil the elections and to realise the scheme, resorted to kill people with petrol bombs,” read Obaidul.
On Khaleda’s call to the President for dialogues, AL said it was ridiculous. “She [Khaleda] offended the prime minister by refusing her call for dialogues. She kept her Gulshan office closed when the premier went to convey her condolences after Khaleda's son had passed away. This way she dismissed the chances of holding dialogues for good.”
The ruling party however said the president would consider and decide accordingly if anything from BNP’s suggestions appeared to be good and acceptable.
The ruling party also claimed that Khaleda’s election formula exhibited her lack of confidence in the people, state employees, police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh.
On amending the Representative of People’s Order (RPO) as suggested by Khaleda, the Awami League general secretary said RPO was a parliamentary law and there was no way it could be amended.
