BNP leader demands fresh city elections

Update : 02 May 2015, 07:13 PM

BNP Standing Committee member ASM Hannan Shah yesterday demanded that the April 28 city corporation election results be scrapped and fresh polls be held.

Terming the election farcical, he said it had revealed the true nature of the government.

“The city corporation polls were a manifestation of what actually happened during the 10th general elections on January 5 last year. We urge the Election Commission to cancel the election results and arrange fresh voting,” he told reporters after laying wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave to mark the founding anniversary of Sramik Dal.

The BNP boycotted the city corporation elections in Dhaka and Chittagong, alleging massive electoral fraud.

Hannan said the people of the country and the international community witnessed how the city polls had been rigged.

“Many countries have already expressed their reactions over the polls.”

The BNP leader said his party had silently protested against the polls, and hence did not react heavily.

“We think we did the right thing as ours is a responsible political party.

“The election results should be invalidated. Otherwise people will respond in their own way one day,” he said.

Hannan said the BNP’s next course of action would be announced later.

“People have to wait to see what the BNP is going to do next.”
