Terming the April 28 city corporation elections farcical, BNP Standing Committee member ASM Hannan Shah has called upon the election commission to arrange a fresh poll.
The BNP leader made the demand while talking to journalists after laying wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman's grave on Saturday, four days after the polls.
“The city corporation polls were a manifestation of what actually happened during the tenth general elections on January 5 last year. We urge the Election Commission to cancel election results and arrange fresh voting,” said Hannan.
He also claimed that the polls in three cities had revealed the true nature of the government.
The BNP boycotted the city corporation elections in Dhaka and Chittagong, alleging massive electoral fraud.
Hannan said the people of the country and the international community witnessed how city polls had been rigged. “Many countries have already expressed their reactions over the polls.”
The BNP leader said his party had silently protested against the polls and hence did not react heavily.
“We think we did the right thing as ours is a responsible political party. The election results should be invalidated. Otherwise people will respond in their own way one day.”
Hannan said the BNP's next course of action would be announced later.
“People have to wait to see what the BNP is going to do next.”
