Syed Taqi Mohammad, also known as Buddan Saheb, a distinguished Urdu poet and prominent social worker and organiser from Old Dhaka, has died at the age of 76.
He died around 8pm Friday at his residence in the Sat Rawza area of Old Dhaka.
Journalist Tarun Sarkar confirmed the news to the media on Saturday in a press release issued on behalf of the Committee for Commissioning Books on Architecture (Dhakar Sthapotto Bishoyok Grontho Pronoyon Committee).
Syed Taqi Mohammad is survived by his wife and five children.
His namaz-e-janaza was held on Saturday afternoon after Zuhr prayers at Hussaini Dalan Imambara. He was later buried at the family graveyard in Sat Rawza.
Born on January 14, 1950, Syed Taqi Mohammad belonged to an aristocratic Mughal family in Sat Rawza. His father, Nawab Syed Ali Mohammad, known as Chhotton, was a prominent zamindar of Dhaka.
Throughout his life, Syed Taqi Mohammad held leadership positions in various social and cultural organisations. He was a member of the Hussaini Dalan Management Committee and the National Waqf Committee.
He also served as mutawalli of the Mohammadi Beg Imambara Waqf Estate, established in Old Dhaka during the Mughal era, until his death.
The kulkhani (post-funeral prayer) for the deceased will be held on Monday. The first session will take place at Hussaini Dalan after Maghrib prayers, followed by a second session at Sat Rawza Khaja Nehal Mosque after Isha prayers.
Tarun Sarkar said Syed Taqi Mohammad had assisted the Committee for Commissioning Books on Architecture by providing important information and documents for its survey of the city’s inscriptions and architectural heritage.
