Baharul Alam officially took charge as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh on Thursday morning, succeeding outgoing IGP Md Moinul Islam.
The government appointed Baharul Alam for a two-year term on Wednesday, says a media statement.
Baharul Alam joined the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the BCS (Police) 1984 batch on January 21, 1986.
Over his career, he held several key positions, including Additional IGP at the Police Headquarters, and head of the Special Branch.
His international service record includes serving as a Senior Police Liaison Officer in the UN Headquarters Peacekeeping Division (2009–2013), acting as a Senior Police Advisor to the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Afghanistan (2015), and participating in field missions in Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Sierra Leone.
Baharul Alam retired from service in 2020 before being reappointed as IGP.
Upon arriving at the Police Headquarters this morning, the newly appointed IGP was accorded a guard of honour by a well-armed police contingent.
