Veteran journalist Shafik Rehman is returning to the country after six years in the United Kingdom.

He is scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12pm on Sunday.

A 'Shafik Rehman Return Committee' has been formed to celebrate his return.

The 'Shafik Rehman Return Committee' announced on Saturday, with greetings of red roses, that a reception will be held at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to mark the return of Shafik Rehman, who has been in exile in London for the past six years after being persecuted by the Sheikh Hasina government.

It was also mentioned that the Bangladesh Biman flight carrying Shafik Rehman, the founder and editor of the weekly Jai Jai Din, will arrive in Dhaka at 12pm on Sunday.

Notably, on August 17, 2023, journalist Shafik Rehman, along with Mahmudur Rahman, the acting editor of the daily Amar Desh, and three others, was sentenced to seven years in prison by Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor in a case involving a conspiracy to abduct and murder Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of the resigned prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former Information Technology Advisor.

They were also fined 5,000 BDT each, with an additional one-month prison sentence in case of non-payment.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy testified in the case on November 13, 2022.

Earlier, on August 3, 2015, a police officer filed the case at Paltan Police Station.

Shafik Rehman was arrested on April 16, 2016, in connection with this case.

Later, he was released on bail and had to leave the country.
