Hefazat Secretary General Kasemi dies

The senior Hefezat leader was hospitalized on December 1 with respiratory and cold-related problems

Nur Hossain Kasemi, the secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, passed away at a hospital in Dhaka on Sunday. He was 75.

He breathed his last around 1:15pm at United Hospital, said his press Secretary Munir Ahmed.

Kasemi, who was also the secretary general of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam, was admitted to the United Hospital on December 1 with respiratory and cold-related problems, he said.

Munir said Kasemi tested negative for the coronavirus.

He said Kasemi was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Thursday as his condition worsened.

Kasemi's namez-e-janaza will be held at the National Eidgah at 9am Monday and later, he will be buried at his hometown in Tongi.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters and a host of well-wishers.

Kasemi had worked as Dhaka city unit president of Hefazat since the establishment of the Quawmi madrasa-based platform.

He was elected secretary general of the organisation at its council held on November 15 , following the death of its supreme leader Shah Ahmad Shafi on September 18.

Kasemi was the founding director of Jamia Madania Madrasah in the capital’s Baridhara area.
