Awami League leader Nurul Alam Chowdhury dies

Sheikh Hasina expresses deep shock at his death

Nurul Alam Chowdhury, former member of parliament (MP) and also president of the Chittagong north district Awami League, has died.

The elderly politician died at the age of 72 due to complicated diseases at Park view Hospital in Chittagong on Sunday.

He had been suffering from kidney and other diseases for long time, reports the BSS

Nurul was a freedom fighter, former ambassador and also ex-president of the Chittagong University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

He left behind his wife, two daughters, one son and a host of relatives,as well as friends,well-wishers and political fellows to mourn his death.

The death of such an elderly political leader of Awami League in Chittagong district cast a pall of gloom in political, cultural and social arenasin the city and elsewhere in the district.

He was elected MP in 1973 and 1986 from Fatikchhari constituency. Nurul was appointed Bangladesh Ambassador to Oman in 2010. He was astudent of the first batch of Chittagong University and joined Bangladesh Civil Service in 1973.

The Awami League leader suffered severe torture in jail by the Mostaque government when he protested the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members on August 15, 1975.

His first namaz-e-janaza will be held at city’s Jamiatul Falah maidan at 10am on Monday, while the second janaza will be held at Fatikchhari College ground after Zohr prayer.

Nurul Alam Chowdhury will be buried at the Motiur Rahman Primary School groundsin Fatikchhari with full state honours after the third janaza.

Meanwhile, leaders of Awami League’s Chittagong city, Chittagong south and north districts, their associate organizations and scores of different organizations expressed condolence on his death.

In addition, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also expressed deep shock and sorrow at his death.

In a condolence message, she prayed for the eternal peace of his departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, in a separate message, also mourned the death of Nurul Alam Chowdhury.
