Senior BNP leader Tariqul Islam dies at 73

The 73-year-old former minister had been admitted at the Apollo Hospital on October 13 due to severe illness

BNP Standing Committee member and former minister Tariqul Islam died at a hospital in Dhaka on Sunday evening. He was 73.

The veteran politician, who had long been suffering from cardiac problems, kidney diseases, diabetes and old-age complications, died at the Apollo Hospitals around 5:05pm, BNP chairperson's media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan confirmed.

Tariqulhad been admitted to the hospital on October 13 in a critical condition, and had been undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Maruful Islam, his nephew and former mayor of Jessore municipality, who has been at the hospital since Sunday afternoon, said: “His [Tariqul’s] condition started deteriorated around midday. During his dialysis, he had a cardiac arrest, according to the on-duty doctor. Doctors put him on life support. Around five in the evening, he died.”

Tariqul's wife Prof Nargis Begum, two sons Shantanu Islam Sumit and Anindha Islam Amit, their wives and close relatives were present at the hospital at the time of his death.

BNP Central Committee member and Bagherpara upazila Chairman TS Ayub and BNP Jessore district committee Organizing Secretary Delwar Hossain Khokon were also present.

Sayrul said Tariqul's first namaz-e-janaza would be held in front of BNP's Naya Paltan central office at 10am, and the second one at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sansad Bhaban at 11:15am.

Later, his body will be flown to Jessore. His third janaza will be held at Jessore Eidgah ground after Asr prayers, after which he will be buried at his family graveyard.
