The children were in high spirits, clad in colourful outfits. The adults were busy making arrangements for guests.
A birthday cake was set up on a small table on one side of the room. A poster that said: “Happy Birthday Maheer!” was pasted on the wall behind the table.
Even though the flat was decorated in a festive fashion, a certain person’s absence was obvious that day.
Everyone put a smile upon their faces, but the smiles failed to cover the grief of the absence of Maheer's mother.
The deceased mother, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of Babul Akter, former superintendent of police (SP) was brutally killed in front of Maheer on June 5, 2016, as she was waiting with him for his school bus.
