Ananya magazine honours 10 women for their outstanding contribution to society

Ananya magazine has honoured 10 women, including Nazia Jabin – founder of Sporsho a braille based publisher for the visually impaired children. On Saturday, Nazia was among 10 women awarded the “Ananya Shirsha Dosh” award for the outstanding contribution to society at an event held at Bangla Academy. The other recipients are – Dr Mosammat Nazmanara Kanum in administration, Farjana Chowdhury in women entrepreneur, Nabonita Chowdhury in journalism, Swapna Rani in self-sufficiency of rural women, Nadira Khanom for rights work, Mahfuza Aktar Kiron in sport organizer, Prof Dr Sadeka Halim in education, Sharmin Sultana in music and Maria Manda in sports. The event had Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Farzana Islam as chief guest. Nazia, who was awarded in the social work category, lost her family in a car accident in 1990. Her late mother Dr Nurunnahar Fiajan Nesa was an academic, social worker, sportswoman and organizer while his father Syed Maksud Ali was the dean of then Dhaka University's Social Science Faculty. One of her family members also sustained severe eye injuries that eventually inspired her to work for the visually impaired. She published her first book in braille called “Chhorar Tale Monta Dhole” in 2009 by Sporsho. Since then, Sporsho has published 61 books in braille. During her acceptance speech, Nazia said: “This would not have been possible without the full support of my family, especially my husband.” Ananya magazine has been honouring outstanding women with the “Ananya Shirsha Dosh” award since 1993.
