Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has called an emergency press briefing following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The briefing is scheduled to take place at 5:00 pm on Friday in the Parliament's Oath Room, according to a press release issued by the Public Relations Wing of the National Parliament Secretariat.

Earlier in the day, the Speaker returned to Dhaka from Bangkok, where he had travelled on July 19 for a medical check-up.

Speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport shortly after his arrival at around 12:15 pm, Hafiz said he was unaware of any development regarding the President's resignation while he was abroad.

Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat Director (Public Relations Wing-2) Saiduzzaman Sayeed requested parliamentary correspondents to attend the briefing.

Earlier, a Parliament Secretariat official said the briefing had been called in connection with the President's resignation, adding that an official announcement on the matter would be made during the briefing.
