The national flag displayed at the Parliament Building is set to increase in size, according to sources from the Parliament Secretariat.
Parliament has selected two new sizes, pending approval from the Cabinet Division.
Currently, flags measuring 10 feet in length and 6 feet in width are hoisted at the north and south plazas of the Parliament Building, following the Flag Rules, 1972. In order to make the flags more visible on this large complex, which stands 155 feet tall with nine floors, the authorities have pushed for increasing their size.
The Parliament Secretariat has proposed two new flag sizes: 15 feet by 9 feet and 20 feet by 12 feet. The decision was discussed in the 35th meeting of the Parliament Secretariat Commission on Tuesday.
The proposal has been forwarded to the Cabinet Division for final approval.
As per the Flag Rules, the Bangladeshi flag's proportions are 10:6. The rules specify three standard sizes for building displays: 10 feet by 6 feet, 5 feet by 3 feet, and 2.5 feet by 1.5 feet. For vehicles, two sizes are specified: 15 inches by 10 inches and 10 inches by 6 inches.
However, the government can approve larger flags, maintaining the correct proportions, based on a building's dimensions. This amendment to allow larger flags was introduced in 1989.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury confirmed the initiative to increase the flag size.
“We want to increase the size of the flags at the south and north plazas of the Parliament Building,” she said.
“According to the Flag Rules, the Cabinet Division's approval is required to increase the flag size. We will display larger flags after obtaining permission from the Cabinet Division."
The Parliament complex, spanning 215 acres, includes nine separate blocks. The eight peripheral blocks rise to a height of 110 feet, while the central octagonal block stands at 155 feet. The complex also features open green spaces, scenic water bodies, and offices for members of parliament. The main plaza covers 823,000 square feet, the south plaza 223,000 square feet, and the north (Presidential) plaza 65,000 square feet.
